Aloha, Oahu friends and fellow eco-warriors! :) Save the date; our next cleanup is right around the corner. Kahana Bay is pretty well-known for lots of micro plastic and other debris scattered across its shores. Let’s help beautify this stunning stretch of beach, and more importantly, give some love and protection back to the ocean + marine life. All needed supplies will be provided, but you are more than welcome to bring your own supplies (bags, sifters, etc.) from home if that would be better for you :) Thank you and we hope to see you soon #SAVETHEOCEAN

Join us Saturday July 21st for a reef and beach cleanup and to Celebrate PADI Women's Dive Day! 

Location: Pua`ena Point Beach Park (Kahalewai Pl, Haleiwa, HI 96712) from 12-3pm

In addition to cleaning the coastline of fishing line, marine debris, trash and plastic this event will be one of many celebrating PADI's Women's Dive Day! Events are held at hundreds of locations worldwide for divers of every level and ability. With so many members of our conservation team being women we are more than happy to host this event and to encourage women of all ages and backgrounds to become divers and get involved with conservation projects and efforts world wide. World Oceans Day: A Beach Clean-Up Giving Back

The ocean covers seventy percent of the world’s surface and is believed to contain 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. Each piece of plastic can take anywhere from 20-1,000 years to break up into smaller pieces, which is to say that it will not completely break down, as most plastic will not decompose completely. Those pieces that do manage to break down create toxins that are carried throughout the ocean. It is believed that every piece of plastic ever made is still somewhere in the ocean. This plastic accumulation causes serious problems for the ocean and marine life. For those who do not care about the ocean or the creatures that live there, perhaps it will be of interest to know that plastic is causing harm to people as well. Plastic waste is constantly ingested by various creatures that are at the bottom of the food chain, which then releases toxins throughout their bodies that is transferred to the creature that ingests them, and so on, slowly making its way up the food chain until the toxins eventually reach our markets and dinner tables, causing serious health problems to those who consume the contaminated fish and marine animals. Although these numbers are overwhelming, it is important we do not get discouraged and take a stand to help save the ocean, marine life, and our own human population before it is too late. Throughout my life, I have learned the smallest events can result in the biggest impacts. Alone, each drop in the ocean is insignificant, but when they all come and move together it creates monumental force. Beneath the surface lies an even greater power in insuppressible currents; from above it may seem calm and delicate, however, below it exists more life than the very land we thrive on. It is a place that should not be used as a trash can, but rather treated with the utmost respect and appreciation.

June 8th, 2017 was World Oceans Day, a day dedicated to the immensely beautiful and everlasting oceans across the world. This is a day to take a stand and give back to the ocean and its inhabitants and what better way to do that than help remove some of the toxins poisoning it. A beach cleanup at Pounders Beach, on the northeast side of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, was organized with the support of One Ocean Diving, One Ocean Conservation, Keiko Conservation, Water Inspired, 4 Ocean, Devoted to the Ocean, Happy Earth Apparel, Naturez Way, Clark Little, Core Power Yoga, Xcel Wetsuits, Guayaki, Mermaids for Change, Real Life Mermaid Shop, Yoga Kai Hawaii, and many other sponsors.

It was a day that proved even the smallest effort can result in significant change. The clean-up began around 11:00am and over 20 people showed up, including many keiki (children) supporters. Seeing so many kids interested and excited to help make a difference was truly inspiring. Saving the ocean and world from the negative impact we have created through our use and improper waste management of plastic is going to take time and patience, and in the end it is going to be up to future generations to correct our mistakes. 

Throughout the cleanup it started to rain a lot and all of our volunteers pushed through the rain and kept collecting debris scattered along the beach - their dedication was amazing. Around 12:30pm a storm came through with strong wind and rain that was too hard to ignore and we had to end the clean-up early. Although the time was short, the impact was great. Over the span of a hour and a half we managed to fill up the bed of a truck with the garbage collected. Without the generosity of our sponsors and dedication of the volunteers this event would not have happened. We came one step closer to healing our beloved ocean, mahalo to all the sponsors and volunteers that made this event possible.

We are so excited to be able to be apart of Kaiser High School's Earth Fest this Friday from 1:30-8:00pm. It is a community event great for the whole family! And with earth day right around the corner this is a great way to celebrate how wonderful our planet is! 🌏 Come stop by at the @oneoceandiving @keiko_conservation booth and learn from other companies, organizations and individuals how you can make a difference and get involved in your community!

Makai Research Pier

We are partnering with SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES HAWAII to host a reef and beach cleanup!

Join us for an Earth Day Celebration focused on giving back and keeping our reef clean. SCH is teaming up with Hawaii Eco Divers, Island Divers, One Ocean Diving and Keiko Conservation to add an underwater element that will incorporate a SCUBA, SNORKEL, and FREEDIVE cleanup! 

Check in and cleanup starts at 9AM and lasts until 11:30 AM. Park at Makai Research Pier or take one of our buses to the site from Waimanalo Beach Park. Buses will begin departing at 9:30AM.

If you are SCUBA certified and want to dive, bring your certification card and your own equipment. Gear and tanks are available, but first come first serve! For SNORKELERS and FREEDIVERS you must bring your own gear. We have limited supply of mesh bags so if you have one please bring it! Please be gentle when removing nets and plastics from our fragile coral reefs. Dive knives and scissors strongly recommended for removing fishing lines and nets from the reef.  

Our goal is to remove the underwater debris that is destroying the reef and endangering sea life.

After the reef cleanup, please join us at Waimanalo Beach Park by 12PM for music, food, games and more! Please consider the environment when briat Kaiser High School nging your own reusable plates, silverware and cups! Please no plastic! :)

Last year we had over 600 people help cleanup up 10,000 lbs of trash off the beach. Help us clean up even more this year with our first underwater cleanup to keep our coastlines clean and inspire year-round coastal stewardship not only through beach cleaning, but through simply using less plastic every day.

Please join us Sunday March 5th at Waimanolo Beach Park from 12-4pm for our latest beach cleanup event in partnership with Keiko Conservation and Water Inspired Conservation Group. In addition to diving along to reef to collect fishing line and lead weights, the focus of this cleanup will be on picking up land based marine debris making its way into the ocean as well as sifting the sand for micro plastics or “nurdles". We will also have a Keiki education hour and yoga session at 11:00am before the cleanup brought to you by Core Power Yoga. The event will be great for all ages and is a fun way to get the whole family involved. We will have prizes for people who collect the most trash from One Ocean Diving, Guayaki, Core Power Yoga, Xcel, Keiko Conservation, Shells4Sharks, Clark Little and more! 

** If you decide to clean the reef PLEASE bring your own scissors and/or dive knife to cut any fishing line! Pulling on the line will only cause more harm and potentially damage the reef. REMEMBER corals are living organisms so please be gentle!**

The cleanup will take place at Waimanolo Beach Park. We will start there and make our way down the coast toward Makai Pier collecting as much plastic and marine debris as possible. Check out the map and photos above for the specific location and directions. Be sure to bring a reusable bag to collect debris, a pair of gloves, sunscreen, snacks and water. We will have a limited supply of mesh bags, scissors and sifters available for use but feel free to bring your own if you have extras! 

This cleanup will also feature our partner Keiko Conservation’s latest campaign the #NerdsAgainstNurdles challenge for a chance to win a free sunrise shell necklace from our non-profit benefit line Shells4Sharks. Collect as many pieces of plastic or garbage as you can, make an image of your favorite sea creature or spell out a conservation message, post it on Instagram with the hashtag “#Shells4SharksGiveaway”. Multiple entires are also welcome if you want to get a head start and practice your #NerdsAgainstNurdles designs at a beach near you before the cleanup. You don’t have to be present at the cleanup to participate, so be sure to tell your friends to maximize our collective impact! The winner of the contest will be announced at the end of the cleanup. We can’t wait to see your submissions!
